The Buckingham Easywipe Bottom Wiper is a clever tool invented by an experienced Occupational Therapist to help people who struggle to reach and clean themselves after going to the bathroom.

Chris was working with a client with MS. The lady found it impossible to keep herself clean because of her illness. She had to ask he husband and sons to help her after using the toilet and this was very embarrassing. When Chris got home she decided to create the first bottom wiper and made it to the specifications that the client needed. It was important that it held the toilet paper and released it without the person needing to touch the paper. – interview with Simon Buckingham

It was made to be super easy to hold and use, thanks to Chris’ experience of helping patients in her work as an OT and her ability to create smart designs. This tool is all about making sure everyone can take care of their hygiene easily and comfortably, no matter their mobility issues. The original Easywipe was launched in 2007.

The importance of hygiene for disabled people:

Maintaining personal hygiene can be challenging for many disabled people due to mobility limitations, health conditions, accessibility barriers, and lack of caregiver support. However, hygiene is critically important for health, dignity, and quality of life.

Inadequate hygiene increases risks of skin breakdown, infections, and illness.

For those with spinal cord injuries or incontinence, hygiene is also essential for preventing dangerous pressure sores

The ability to independently attend to personal hygiene promotes autonomy and self-esteem. Adaptive aids and routine assistance enable more freedom and participation.

Unfortunately, many disabled individuals cannot access adapted facilities and struggle with self-care. Better disability awareness and accommodations are needed.

Caregivers require guidance to properly assist clients while respecting dignity and preferences.

With suitable support, disabled people can maintain hygiene, health, and self-determination.

The disability community deserves fully accessible and inclusive options for this basic human need.

Disability And Water Access Globally

The acronym WASH, invented by the United Nations, stands for “water, sanitation, and hygiene.”
Access to clean water and proper sanitation (WASH) is crucial for everyone, but people with disabilities face unique challenges. These can include:

Physical Barriers:

No toilet at home

Far or crowded public toilets

Steps and narrow entrances

Poorly lit areas

Difficult-to-use doors and handles

Slippery floors

High controls for flushing and washing

Lack of support aids for toilet use

Social Barriers:

Discrimination and ignorance from society

Need for assistance compromising privacy

Extra time needed in facilities leading to issues at school or work

Limited opportunities to voice concerns

Wheelchair pushrims are the circular bars that surround the rear wheels of a manual wheelchair. As the name suggests, wheelchair users grip these rims and push forward to propel their chair. This moves the drive wheels and controls speed and direction.

Choosing an optimal set of pushrims is important for several reasons:

Mobility: Good pushrims improve propulsion and make the wheelchair easier to maneuver. Their grip, size, shape and material impact mobility.

Injury Prevention: Bad pushrims can strain the hands, wrists and shoulders. Ergonomic options prevent overuse injuries.

Function: Pushrims must match the user’s strength, range of motion and coordination. Custom options suit different needs.

In short, pushrims act as the critical interface between wheelchair user and chair. Their design directly impacts mobility and health.

Research confirms that pushrim design has tangible clinical benefits.

Well-designed pushrims can prevent upper body overuse issues like carpal tunnel syndrome or rotator cuff injuries. How? Through improved grip, better biomechanics and reduced strain during propulsion.

Pushing a Wheelchair

Pushing a wheelchair needs care and attention. You need to:

Learn how the wheelchair works. Know how to use the brakes, footrests, and armrests. These parts are important for safety and comfort.

Check the path ahead. Look for bumps, slopes, or other obstacles. This helps you keep the ride smooth and safe.

Focus on comfort. Adjust armrests and footrests to suit the person in the wheelchair. This makes them more comfortable.

Take care of the wheelchair. Check the brakes, tires, and other parts often. Fix problems early to keep it working well.

Remember:

Always think about the person in the wheelchair. Talk to them and check if they are comfortable. Use proper pushing techniques to avoid hurting yourself.

Wheelchair handling is a skill that requires knowledge of the device’s basic features and functions. This includes understanding how to operate its controls, adjust its parts for comfort, manoeuvre it in different environments, and perform essential maintenance tasks. It also involves knowing how to handle the wheelchair safely to prevent accidents or injuries.

The first step in mastering wheelchair handling is getting familiar with its various components. These may include the wheels (both large and small), hand rims, brakes, footrests, armrests, seat belts among others. Knowing what each part does can help you use the wheelchair more effectively. For instance, using the hand rims can give you better control over speed and direction while moving on flat surfaces.

Another critical aspect of wheelchair handling is learning proper techniques for pushing and steering. This usually involves positioning your hands on the hand rims at about 10 o’clock and 2 o’clock positions respectively before propelling forward or backward by pushing down on one rim while pulling up on another simultaneously depending upon whether you want to move straight ahead or turn around corners respectively without causing any discomfort or strain to yourself or user sitting inside it ensuring their safety as well during this process which forms an integral part of understanding basics involved here thoroughly indeed making it much easier than initially perceived by many out there today!

Assessing the Surrounding Environment and Terrain

A crucial aspect of wheelchair handling is the assessment of the surrounding environment and terrain. It involves understanding and evaluating various factors such as ground surface, inclines or declines, obstacles, and weather conditions that can impact mobility. For instance, a smooth paved pathway will allow for easier movement than a gravel path or grassy area. Similarly, rain or snow can make surfaces slippery and challenging to navigate.

The importance of this evaluation cannot be overstated as it directly affects not only the ease of maneuverability but also the safety of the wheelchair user. Identifying potential hazards in advance allows for better planning and reduces risks associated with navigating through difficult terrains. This could include avoiding areas with steep slopes, uneven surfaces or steps without ramps whenever possible.

Additionally, assessing the environment extends beyond just physical aspects; it includes understanding social elements too. For example, crowded places might require additional navigation skills compared to less populated areas. Also considering noise levels which may cause discomfort to some individuals is essential too. Therefore keeping these factors in mind while assessing surroundings ensures an optimal experience for both carer and wheelchair user alike by promoting efficient mobility while minimizing potential difficulties encountered along their journey.

Making Use of Wheelchair Features for Easier Mobility

Wheelchairs are equipped with various features designed to enhance mobility and ease of use. These features vary depending on the type of wheelchair, but some common ones include adjustable armrests, footrests, backrests and seat depth. Adjustable armrests allow for a comfortable resting position for the arms and can also assist in transfers from the wheelchair to another surface such as a bed or car seat. Footrests support the feet and legs, helping to maintain proper body alignment. They can often be adjusted in height or swung away when not needed.

The backrest provides necessary support for the spine while seated in a wheelchair. Some wheelchairs have reclining backrests that can be adjusted to different angles for comfort during prolonged sitting periods or even napping. The seat depth is also an important feature because it affects how well one’s thighs are supported while seated. A properly adjusted seat depth reduces pressure sores risk by evenly distributing weight across the entire seating surface.

Brakes are another essential feature of wheelchairs that significantly contribute towards easier mobility. When engaged, they secure the wheelchair in place preventing any unwanted movement especially on slopes or uneven surfaces which could lead to accidents if unchecked. Additionally, some wheelchairs come equipped with push handles at their rear end making it easier for caregivers to maneuver them around obstacles or through tight spaces without straining themselves physically.

Ensuring the Comfort and Safety of the Wheelchair User

One of the primary concerns when handling a wheelchair is to ensure the user’s comfort and safety. This involves not just physical well-being, but also emotional support. The seat cushion should be checked regularly for any signs of wear and tear as it plays a crucial role in providing comfort to the user. A worn-out or uncomfortable cushion can lead to discomfort, pressure sores, and other health issues over time.

In addition to the seating arrangement, attention must be paid to how securely the user is positioned within the wheelchair. Safety belts are often overlooked but they play an essential part in preventing accidents such as falls from sudden stops or shifts in movement. They should be fastened firmly yet comfortably around the waist area without causing any discomfort or restriction of movement.

The positioning of footrests and armrests also contribute significantly towards ensuring comfort and safety for users. These components need to be adjusted according to individual needs for optimal support while seated in a wheelchair. Footrests that are too high could cause circulation problems whereas those set too low might lead to postural issues over time; similarly, improperly adjusted armrests may result in shoulder pain or strain injuries due its improper use as leverage during transfers or turns.

Guidelines for Correct Body Posture While Pushing a Wheelchair

Maintaining the correct body posture while pushing a wheelchair is crucial to both the carer and the user’s safety and comfort. It starts with standing upright, feet shoulder-width apart, knees slightly bent for flexibility. The back should remain straight at all times to avoid straining it. When pushing forward, use your leg muscles instead of relying solely on your arms or upper body strength; this reduces unnecessary tension in those areas.

The hands play a significant role when handling a wheelchair too. They should be placed comfortably on the push handles or grips, not gripping them too tightly but enough to have control over the chair’s movements. Always remember that abrupt stops or turns can startle or discomfort the person seated in the wheelchair so aim for smooth transitions as much as possible.

It’s also important to consider how you move when navigating different terrains or obstacles such as slopes, curbs, doorways etc., leaning slightly forward when going uphill can provide extra leverage while leaning back just a bit helps control speed downhill without compromising stability. If you find yourself fatigued after short periods of time pushing a wheelchair then it may be worth consulting with an occupational therapist who can offer advice tailored specifically towards your situation and needs.

Navigating Through Doors, Ramps, and Elevators

When it comes to moving through doors, several considerations need to be made. First, the width of the door must be sufficient for the wheelchair to pass through comfortably. If a door is too narrow, you may have to consider modifications or find an alternate route that can accommodate the wheelchair’s size. Secondly, how the door opens and closes will also affect navigation. Doors that swing outward are generally easier for a wheelchair user as they allow more space for maneuvering.

Ramps and elevators also present their unique challenges when handling a wheelchair. When dealing with ramps, one should assess its steepness before attempting any ascent or descent. A ramp that is too steep could pose risks such as tipping over or difficulty in pushing up due to gravity resistance. It’s important not only considering your strength but also taking into account whether there are railings on either side of the ramp which can offer additional support during movement.

Elevators provide an excellent means of mobility between floors without having to deal with stairs; however, some factors need attention here too. The elevator car must be spacious enough for comfortable entry and exit without bumping into walls or other passengers inside it. Moreover, remember always position yourself close enough so you can reach control buttons easily but far away from closing doors avoiding accidental bumps while entering or exiting.

Handling Wheelchair on Uneven Surfaces and Stairs

Navigating a wheelchair on uneven surfaces and stairs requires special attention to ensure the safety of the user. Uneven surfaces such as gravel, sand, or cobblestones can be challenging due to their unstable nature. The key is to maintain a steady pace and try not to turn sharply or abruptly. It’s also important for the carer to position themselves at the back of the wheelchair while traversing these terrains in order to provide additional support.

Stairs present another set of challenges when it comes to wheelchair handling. If there is no ramp or lift available, it may be necessary for a carer to manually assist with carrying the chair up or down steps. This should always be done backwards (i.e., going up stairs backward and coming down forward) so that gravity helps rather than hinders your efforts. Remember that communication between you and the person in the chair is crucial during this process – they need clear instructions about what you’re doing so they can help by leaning back slightly.

Regular maintenance checks are vital too because wheelchairs used on rough terrains can easily get damaged which might make them more difficult handle especially on uneven surfaces and stairs. Keep an eye out for any loose bolts, wear and tear on tires or issues with brakes as these could potentially lead into dangerous situations if left unnoticed.

Maintaining the Wheelchair for Optimal Performance

Regular maintenance is crucial to keep a wheelchair in optimal working condition. This not only ensures the longevity of the equipment but also guarantees the safety and comfort of its user. The first step towards maintaining a wheelchair is to thoroughly clean it on a regular basis. Dust, dirt, and grime can accumulate over time and cause wear and tear on various parts such as wheels, brakes, or bearings. Therefore, using a soft cloth or sponge with warm soapy water can help remove these unwanted particles.

Another essential aspect of wheelchair maintenance involves regularly checking for any loose or worn-out parts. For instance, nuts and bolts should be tightened appropriately since they may come loose due to constant movement. Similarly, tires need to be inspected for signs of wear or damage that could potentially lead to punctures or instability during use. If any part appears damaged beyond repair, it should ideally be replaced immediately by consulting with an expert technician.

It’s important not just focusing on mechanical aspects but also considering cushions or upholstery which contribute significantly towards user comfortability levels while using wheelchairs daily basis . These materials are prone getting dirty easily hence requiring frequent cleaning ensure hygiene standards maintained all times . Additionally , cushion covers might require replacement if they show severe signs deterioration affecting overall seating experience adversely . By following these simple yet effective steps , one can ensure their wheelchair remains top-notch condition providing seamless mobility whenever needed without compromising safety features at any point time .

At the Museum of Liverpool there’s a small, unassuming exhibition which looks like the recreation of a normal house. When you get inside you realise it has been setup with every possible gadget and gizmo to support independence. The Mi Smarthouse is a project put together by More Independent (Mi).

More Independent is a Government-funded initiative that is being piloted across four UK regions. As there website says the scheme exists to:

enable you to take charge of your health, wellbeing and lifestyle

use technology to allow you to feel safer and live more independently in your own home

give peace of mind to yourself and your family

reduce the amount of time you have to spend on appointments, by supporting you to manage better at home

The Mi Smarthouse at the museum is kitted out with a wide range of equipment covering all the key areas of the home. Here we’re taking a look at some of the gadgets they’ve highlighted and used in their perfect, accessible home.

General

These gadgets could be useful at any place in your home and can make it feel more safe and secure.

Fall Detector

Fall Detector

A fall detector can be worn around your neck and it connected to a system which will alert your carer if you do fall even if they’re not on the premises.

Large Buttons Picture Telephone

Phone keypads can be hard to use and it can also be difficult to remember phone numbers. This phone has spaces for photographs of those people you call regularly as well as large, clear numbers for when you need to dial out.

Home Safety Alert

The Mi Smarthouse has a bonus caller panic button installed by the front door, giving the residents the chance to press the button if anyone arrives at the door who they’re not comfortable with. Similar home safety alarm system can be found elsewhere too.

Supra KeySafe

Supra KeySafe

The Supra KeySafe is the UK’s first police approved key safe and is the perfect place to store your emergency keys. You choose a combination number and you can share this number only with somebody you trust implicitly.

Carbon Monoxide Sensor

Carbon monoxide can kill. It’s odourless and can’t be seen so the only way to sense it before it is too late is with a dedicated carbon monoxide sensor. Sensors can be easily installed and can save your life.

Fingerprint Lock

A fingerprint lock is a great option if you struggle with keys. You can add the details of your carer and friends as authorised ‘pad-pressers’ so they can get in and out with ease when necessary too.

Kitchen

We’ve talked regularly about the importance of gadgets to make access to the kitchen easier. It’s potentially a dangerous environment so anything to make it less so is a good invention in our book. In the Mi Smarthouse they demonstrated a range of kitchen-specific gadgets.

Talking Microwave

The controls on a microwave oven can be difficult if you have difficulties with your vision or dexterity. A Talking Microwave Oven can help guide you to the buttons you need and it will also tell you when the door is open or closed and let you know whether the food needs stirring or left to stand.

Induction Hob

An induction hob only cooks the pot upon it. There is next to no danger of being burned by it and they’re becoming a common installation in supported living environments to aid independence. This type of hob is also energy efficient and reaches top temperatures in record time. In the Mi House the hob was fitted but they can also be bought as separate electric units .

One cup Kettle

We’ve talked before about how useful the one cup kettle can be. Never worry about spilling boiling water as the kettle will dispense the exact amount you need with the simple pressing of a button.

Entertainment and Living Area

Many of these items listed below could be used all around the house but are most useful when you’re relaxing in front of the TV or lounging on the sofa.

Big Switch and Remote

Big Switch Remote

A Remote Control Big Switch can be positioned wherever you need it to avoid bending to switch off items which have plug sockets uncomfortably out of reach. The big switch can be used with any electrical appliance in the home.

Voice Recorder Switches

If speech has always been or is becoming difficult then these small voice recorder switches can be used to record key phrases. They can have messages such as ‘I’m hungry’ or ‘I want to go home’ ready recorded for when you’re home or out and about when speech has become difficult.

Chair Occupancy Alert

This item is extremely useful if you have an outside care team supporting you as it allows them to monitor the time spent out of your chair. If it seems exceptionally long they may phone you or come around the check everything is OK.

Big Jack Controller

Big Jack Multi-Controller

The Big Jack can replace all your smaller, fiddly remotes and switches. It can be programmes for a whole range of jobs and can be used to change channels on the TV, switch off lights and even use the telephone.

Personal Care

The personal care element of the home is the most private. Both the bedroom and bathroom are places where you want to maintain as much independence as possible and some of these gadgets are designed to guarantee this as well as ensure you can get the help you need, when you need it.

Epilepsy Sensor

Epilepsy Sensor

Living with any form of epilepsy or convulsions can be extremely frightening – especially if you’re alone when one occurs. This epilepsy sensor will alert an outdoor care team if a seizure is taking place, allowing them to provide the right support ASAP.

Enuresis Sensor

Enuresis Sensor

Designed to fit comfortable under the top sheet, an enuresis sensor will alert your carer to the fight signs of dampness whilst in bed – ensuring you’re not left uncomfortable for a long period of time. We have looked at these aids previously for helping children but they can be equally useful later in life.

Flood Detector

A flood detector will guarantee you never forget about another bath. It’s very easy to forget the bath is running but with the installation of a simple detector, it will be safe and you can avoid the risks of damage to your home and the even higher risk of slipping.

The Mi Smarthouse in Liverpool is one of the first examples of how all this technology can come together and successfully be used to help people remain in their own homes independently. You can take a virtual tour of the Smarthouse here. We recently visited the £D printing exhibition at the London Science Museum and will cover the potential benefits in a future post.

This simple little invention is something that may a big difference to people who use crutches and walking aids. People using crutches often need a crutch holder. How exactly can you comfortably, easily and without too much trouble hold crutches or walking sticks when they’re not in use?

Meet Bridgit – The Clever and Attractive Crutch Clip

Bridgit Securing A Walking Stick to A Chair

Bridgit is a clever little device which solves the problem. Simple and straightforward, Bridgit connects together two crutches or sticks in a stable X shape so they can rested securely against any convenient surface, such as a nearby wall or table. No longer do you have to worry about causing a hazard by lying your sticks on the floor or knocking them accidentally into other people. Also, as an extremely versatile product, Bridgit can even be used with single crutches or stick to hook them securely over backs of chairs or onto hand rails so they’re out of the way but still accessible when you need them. The unnecessary stress of bending and stretching to retrieve your aids can be completely removed.

Suitable for all walking sticks and crutches between 18 and 25mm, you could even use Bridgit with the funky and fashionable foldable sticks we’ve featured previously. The Bridgit Clutch Clip is both affordable and solves a problem. If you’re looking for a safe and easy way to keep your crutches/sticks accessible and within reach but not in anybody else’s way, this is it.

Made of a durable plastic they are lightweight and easy to clip on, as well as being strong and of good quality. Designed by the same team: Such and Such Design, who created the Duo double handed cup holder and the the Strawberi Straw Holder. The prototypes of the Bridgit Crutch Holder were shown to the public at Naidex 2011 and the Mobility Roadshow last year to test public opinion and improve the design.

UPDATE FOR 2013

If you are looking for a new crutch or walking stick and are wondering about what are the most stylish options, check out our new post about Cool Walking Sticks.

The simplicity and ease of use of the Bridgit Walking Stick and Crutch holder makes it one of the most popular mobility aids on the market. We’ve found an excellent review that really pinpoints the usefulness of the Bridgit and how it has helped the reviewer:

“So Very Useful” review written by Patricia Farr – Rated Five Stars (February 2013)

The cane holder is such a small, insignificant item – but oh so very useful. Instead of sitting in my wheelchair hanging on to my crutch awkwardly and sometimes dropping it, it is now held securely and I have both hands free.

All New Topro Troja 2G Rollator

Having previously discussed the fantastic Topro Troja Rollator back in February, we’re pleased to announce that a new model was introduced during the New Product Showcase at the 2012 Naidex National Convention in May. With all the benefits of the original model plus much more we’re excited to see how this new model measures up and of course, give you a closer look at its specifications and check out any relevant customer reviews.

Since the original Troja won many awards the engineers behind the brand have put their all into developing an even more superior model, providing the requirements and surpassing the expectations of their customers. Officially launching in September 2011, the original roll out of the product came with the following video:

Unparalleled Levels of Comfort and Safety

Described as a premium rollator, the 2nd generation Troja is designed with your comfort and safety in mind. New features include ergonomically developed handles, to provide a wider range of possible hand positions whilst in use. Quick release wheels also mean you can now store the Troja 2G even more easily especially when travelling by car. Additional reflective panels have been fitted to further the security you feel whilst using your rollator and the model has also been equipped with further enhanced kerblifter technology, making those pesky curbs a worry of the past. These additional features are all on top of the standard features which already put the Norwegian brand at the top of the rollator market.

Both industry experts and users were excited and interested in the newest Topro product at Naidex and this hasn’t stopped as the product has reached a wider audience base. At Living with Disability we are excited when any new product is launched but particularly so when a produce we have recommended so highly in the past has surpassed itself and been improved further.

The Trabasack Wheelchair Lap Tray

It can be difficult for wheelchair users to find the right bag for their needs, especially if they want to carry a laptop, iPad, or small detachable speech simulator with them. And many of us who use wheelchairs know how frustrating it is to have our movement restricted by a conventional wheelchair tray.

Ideal for meals, or a quick cuppa on the move!

The Trabasack range of wheelchair lap trays could be just what the situation calls for. Trabasack wheelchair lap trays have one side as tray surface that is firm and flat enough to write and work upon, and underneath a small beanbag sac that helps the trabasack to rest levelly on your knees without adding to the weight. Your Trabasack lap tray is convenient to carry and use on your lap wherever you are and whatever you’re doing: to sign forms in the bank; to rest your cup of coffee; to write notes; or for crafting.

Between the flat and beanbag surfaces of the Trabasack is a securely zipped bag with more than enough space for your daily needs. The Trabasack Curve is large enough for a 14″ laptop or notebook computer – it’s shaped to fit perfectly round the waist, and has no hard corners. The Trabasack Mini is super slim but large enough for iPads and most smaller laptops and notepads, and for A4 documents.

A Trabasack comes with handles and a choice of straps, so as well as a wheelchair lap tray it can be used as a briefcase, a messenger bag, or a shoulder bag. You can machine wash your Trabasack, and of course it comes with a one year guarantee.

Both types of Trabasack come with a choice of surfaces on the flat side. The standard Trabasack has black leather-style PVC, easy to wipe clean and hardwearing. The Curve has a soft Velcro ready surface: anything with Velcro “hooks” attached will stick to it. So, for instance, you could attach velcro to your phone, remote control, games console, or a child’s toy, and be sure it won’t fall out of reach.

Here is a video testimonial from public speaker, Dr Mark Edworthy, that explains why he finds it useful:

Altogether the Trabasack is that rarest of things: a multipurpose product that really does succeed in all it sets out to do. Very highly recommended!

Low-tech lifesavers: Folding Walking Sticks

At Living With Disability we hope to show you a huge range of fantastic and potentially life changing product of both low and high tech design. Sometimes even the simplest thing can make a huge difference and like our heading says whether by accident or design, these things can make your life much easier.

The first thing we’re looking at are folding walking sticks. It seems this simple invention has made a huge difference for many people as this tweet shows:

[blackbirdpie url=”http://twitter.com/#!/rightsnequality/status/139637757705338880″]

An attractively patterned folding walking stick

This is just one example of somebody who really rates the folding walking stick and there are many different models on the market to cater to different individuals and needs. As a well established product folding walking sticks can retail for a range of prices and come in a range of different styles and patterns. You will be able to find one which suits your style and like the tweeter above says, they’re great for those who may not initially need the support of a stick but as the day goes on, it becomes necessary. You can simply take your stick out of your bag and support yourself with its help. Additionally, if you’re a wheelchair user, these small folding walking sticks are much more easy to store without taking up too much space.

Switch sticks are one popular brand of folding walking stick and they come in a range of styles and patterns to suit your personal preferences. This video shows exactly how easy their products are to use:

Foldable sticks and canes can be stylish and study

As you can see, they’re extremely simple to use and very popular with their users. Customers love the fact that as well as being completely foldable, these folding walking sticks have several height adjustment levels and are lightweight but sturdy. They provide everything you need from your walking stick including the extra support at the end of a long day.
