Essential Items: Talking Tin Lids

You can use your Talking Tin Lid on any food container

If you have a visual disability, then having your kitchen set up in the right way is essential to avoid the many risks that could occur. The RNIB and other charities work tirelessly to provide gadgets and inventions which can make the kitchen a safer place and somewhere you can independently access everything you need. One of their inventions is the talking tin lids, a truly great idea.

Talking tin lids are a specially designed recording produce which can help you identify the contents of any food storage container, most obviously tinned foods. They are extremely easy to record messages on and then you know exactly what’s in the tin and also, if there’s space you can record a best before date too, further enhancing your food safety in the home.

The majority of talking tin lids available has a 10 second recording time although you can get them with up to 40 seconds. In 10 seconds it is possible to say “baked beans, best before 15th Dec” for example so you can ensure you know what product is there and how long its shelf life is. The talking tin lids fit comfortably with magnets to all tin lids including ring pull tins but excluding those that have aluminium lids. You can also use them on other containers as they come with a self-adhesive metal disc and/or an elastic strap to attach them with. However, the tin lids are not microwave or freezer safe so keep this in mind whilst using them.

They have received some great reviews from the visually impaired community, many of whom are delighted by the fact that they aid daily independence and make finding ingredients and cooking much easier than before.  There are many different options and they can be used on containers of all shapes and sizes due to the additional adhesive choice.

Ingenious Ideas: Theraputty

The Theraputty Range

Theraputty is a great product, a great gift idea and a great tool for rehabilitation, maintaining grip and and flexibility. In a range of colours, strengths and tub sizes, you can find the Theraputty that you like best and use it to improve and work on your fine motor skills.

Theraputty is a fun and practical way of strengthening your hand and wrist dexterity and working on your grip. It can be used to develop and improve your fine and gross motor control skills and is brilliant for exercising your hands, fingers and forearm exercises. It can be used in general physio sessions and is also recommended for anybody who has suffered an injury or is recovering from surgery. It comes in a range of colours and four strength levels and as you work on your strength, you can move up to the next level of putty.

Customers are really surprised and happy with the results of using their Theraputty. One customer received NHS advice to get some to support their child with their fine motor skills and saw marked improvement within weeks and there are many comments describing Theraputty as fun as well as challenging which makes therapy sessions much less of a bore. You can work with your Theraputty wherever you are so you can enjoy your favourite TV but work out your fingers and wrists at the same time. Don’t use it for putting in your windows though, it’s not that kind of putty. 😉

This video shows an occupational therapy team demonstrating some great exercises using Theraputty:

Theraputty is a fun theraputic putty to improve dexterity and strength in hands and arms. Recommended by occupational therapist and physiotherapists. If you’re interested in buying some Theraputty for yourself or finding out more, click on the box below:

Update with some comments from our Tumblr Blog

I like the black theraputty because it’s SUPER stiff and takes a really long time to heat up and get “gooey” like silly putty does. So basically, if you don’t need much resistance then silly putty works. I need lots of resistance so it doesn’t work as well.

Something Different: Unique Blue Badge Holders

Something Different: Unique Blue Badge Holders

Every now and again we come across a product which we really rate for its individuality. These blue badge holders are one such

product. We first saw the new Blue Badge Company exhibiting at Naidex South 2011, and we were really impressed by the quality, range and bright colours available.

The Blue Badge Company

The Blue Badge Company was launched  in 2010 by designer Camilla Hall, who didn’t like the ordinary, plain and awkward-to-use Blue badge wallets that were available.

She wanted to create something that reflected the user’s individual style, that they would be comfortable using every day.

Creating a new format she found specially tested acetate windows that allow the Badge and timer permit to be displayed clearly & legally.

Finally, here is a product which allows for a bit of style and funkiness to jazz up a blue badge!

The exotic Fire Cracker Blue Badge Holder design

These blue badge holders and parking display wallets come in a wide range of patterns and styles. Produced by the Blue Badge Company, you can be assured of their quality and they’re much more stylish than the traditional blue badge holders or disability parking badge wallets that we have seen available. Made in Britain, in fact, hand made in a workshop in Bristol, they use fully UK sourced materials. These wallets are designed to provide Blue Badge holders with an practical but stylish item which can express their own individuality instead of looking clinical and boring. There are a massive EIGHTY designs to choose from and from seeing the range on their impressive show stand, we think almost every taste is covered, from Pink PVC to suede! They make an absolutely awesome gift for a friend or relative who uses a Blue Badge.

Fabrics range from the girly Cath Kidston inspired Cathy to the more traditional Westwood and many more besides. You can get almost any design you can think of from the very popular purple Chinese silk to Army camouflage and anyone who has a disabled badge will be happy with their new product.
